What role does an individual organism play as per Darwin’s theory of natural selection?

According to Darwin, fitness (reproductive fitness) of an individual affects evolution of species. An individual organism who better fits in an environment leave more progeny than others. This organism will survive more and hence gets selected by nature. He called this as natural selection and implied it as a mechanism of evolution.
