Many species of bacteria have been used in production of food supplement, e.g., Methylophilus has a generation time of about two hours and is usually and mainly used in animal feed. It is also used to produce a more favourable protein composition than yeast and fungi. 250 gm of this microbe produces 25 tonnes of protein per day.

The blue-green algae Spirulina has been considered for use as a supplementary protein. It is very easily cultivated in tanks and produces large quantities of food rich in protein, minerals, fats, carbohydrates and vitamins
