She held her first art exhibition when she was in class 9 in her apartment. That was an eye opener for Sirigowri Kambalimath’s parents where she is headed to. On Tuesday, this Bengaluru girl emerged as the all India topper in the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) 2018 entrance.

Sirigowri studied commerce with psychology in Sri Kumaran’s Children’s Home, Mallasandra campus in her higher secondary school. “I was interested in studying psychology and I thought a combination with commerce would open many avenues for me. Psychology and design go hand in hand. Because we are designing for people and we must understand their choices, preferences to design something for them,” she told TOI. Although she is second in overall national ranking, she stood first in general merit category.

She was always inclined towards art, says her techie father Shivaprasad Kambalimath. “She was good in arts, story writing and painting from her childhood and we encouraged her. But in high school, it became clear that she wants to pursue a different career. Our thoughts are structured and hers was not at all structured. We never forced our thoughts on her,” he says.

But the girl had all the clarity she needed to walk towards her dreams. “I knew broad branches of design but did not know the scope of each of these streams. That is why I joined Design Quotient Labs, a coaching institute where professional designers from all fields of design gave us firsthand experience and guided me to decide what exactly should I pursue in graduation.,” Sirigowri added.

She is yet to decide on admission in NIFT Delhi or Mumbai but her parents have no issues sending her where it would be best for her. “I have applied to study fashion communication because I feel fashion has been misinterpreted for a long time. Fashion defines us, our personality. The clothes we wear is like walking with our own art,” she says. Sirigowri aspires to put up her show at Milan, the headquarters of fashion one day.
